Internet Searching
- Finding Information on the Internet
- A tutorial and guide from UC Berkeley. Fanatically well done. Where to go to see what's new in the world of Internet search tools and to figure out which ones to use when. Links to basic Internet info and how to use Netscape.
- Search Engine Watch
- Good guide to comparative information on many search engines.
- Search Engine Showdown
- Not comprehensive, but a good comparison of the most used search systems. Tips on strategy. Links to reviews. Information on desktop applications included.
- Nothing But 'Net
- Choose your criteria for a search engine; and this nifty little site picks the search engine(s) that best match. From University Missouri-Columbia Health Sciences Library.
- Internet Searching Tools
- From Southern Oregon University Library. An excellent assortment of search tools, subject directories, and other useful resources for finding stuff on the Web. Especially useful is the set of links to several searching tutorials, guides, and tip sheets.
Internet Search Tools
- Google
- The best! Just put in your terms and click. The interface's simplicity is belied by the complex relevancy ranking algorithm. It's uncanny how what you're looking for is right there at the top.
- AltaVista
- Comprehensive WWW search engine. Easy to use, but takes skill to create quality searches which target enormous retrieval capability. Direct link to multi-lingual translation tool.
- Northern Light
- Powerful WWW search engine which sorts retrieval into useful categories. Optional fee-based links to full text from 5,400 journals, reviews, books, magazines and news wires.
- HotBot
- Worth checking out, especially if you don't want to learn how to use advanced features of other search engines. Lots of ads.
- Infomine
- Billed as a "scholarly Internet resource collection" and created by librarians, primarily at California universities. Links to lots of databases and full text resources. Browsable and searchable, with a clean interface.
- Yahoo!
- The best known of the WWW directories. Easy to use, once you learn how search results are organized. Probably the best place to start if you're new to the Net.
- Ask Jeeves!
- Results vary, but a great place to try. Exceptionally easy. Uses several search engines, sorts retrieval in unique, but interesting categories.
- InFoPeople's Best Search Tools
- Categorizes search tools and provides a couple of lines' worth of hints. You can only use one search engine at a time, but this is a good point of departure. From California State Library.
- ZapMeta
- A meta-search engine with a unique "quick view" feature that lets you preview a site without leaving the search results page.
- Dogpile
- Another meta-search engine, combing through AltaVista, Excite, Yahoo, WebCrawler, Magellan and a bunch of others. Retrieved URLs include brief annotations and "Click here to perform a search for documents like this one" option.
- ProFusion
- Do we need yet another? Yessss! Choose the search engines you want, opt for speed or retrieval, pick boolean operators, word or phrase searching; all these parameters are easy to set within the user friendly interface. Fast, too.
