Strategies for Dividing

Modeling Dimensions and Area in Base 10

We can review the meanings of division explored earlier with the example 47 ÷ 10. Using the base ten pieces we can show several models, each with a different interpretation of the division process.

The grouping model answers the question "How many groups of 10 are in 47?"

In the sharing model, we want to create 10 equal groups from 47:

We can also form a rectangle area model with 47 square units, and one dimension of 10:

We can use the same models for numbers containing decimal fractions as well, by letting a mat be a square unit. The basic procedures are the same.

In class, we explore lots of examples. Here are some we did - which methods might work best for each one?

As we work through the examples, students begin to formulate their own algorithms - using symbols to keep track of their strategies. Talk to your child about some of the symbolic ways they have invented to keep track of their division strategies.
