Movie News

History:  The movie had a limited release Sept 11, 1998.  It never got a full release and was basically out of the theaters by then end of November 1998.  CBS was reported to have the television rights for 1 year.  HBO has been showing the movie.  The movie has been released in DVD and video.   Sutherland was  nominated for a Golden Globe award and won the Golden Satellite Award in his supporting role as Bill Bowerman.  Billy Crudup (lead actor), Conrad Hall (cinematography), Robert Towne (director, co-wirter), and Kenny Moore (co-writer, executive producer) all received critical acclaim. Oregonian - Hi-Lo Country ... Western with a noir twist
by Shawn Levy

Click here to see Shawn's review of Hi-Lo Country which co-stars Billy Crudup.

Shawn says ... "Crudup (who played Steve Prefontaine in the unfairly underdistributed "Without Limits") is a wiry customer along the lines of the young Montgomery Clift, not as gorgeous, of course, but at least as credibly naive and earnest.  He's a pretty cool cat, but one of the best things about his performance is that he never seems to know it.

Without Limits - "A portrait of the artist as a long-distnace runer.  Steve Prefontaine (well played by Billy Crudup) is a knothead, determined to shape his life and race to his own vision.  This biography, from director and co-writer Robert Towne, is a sweet, sober meditiation on winning, losing and the enigmas of American maleness."

On television?

Four recent Warner Bros. pictures — “City of Angels,” “A Perfect Murder,” “The Negotiator” and “Without Limits” — will get their first window on CBS, each playing once within a one-year license term. After that one play, the pictures go back to Turner for approximately a three-year exclusive window.

Without Limits release

I have been anxiously awaiting the full release of Without Limits since early September. I have searched the entire area for a theater that was showing it, but was unable to find even a theater that expected to get it.  I even went so far as to try and find a theater in one of the cities I traveled to that might be showing it, but again no luck. I've visited Warner Brothers' website several times trying to get more information on its release but they don't believe in updating their web pages very often. And amazingly, there is no email address anywhere on their web site for comments. You can post comments on their message boards, but no one seems to read them, since there are already several complaints about the non-release of Without Limits.

Warner Brothers gets an "F" in customer service from me.

Too early a death

Thanks for trying to keep the flame alive for "Without Limits.  It came to Ventura, California, but only briefly. I went to see it at a local first-run multiplex early on a Sunday evening.

The audience was two -- myself, and an older white-haired gentleman who in the dark on the other side of the theatre could just have well been Bill Bowerman himself for all I knew.

It really is a shame that the film will go to video at too early an age.

When the track scenes come along, the combination of editing, mixed stock and new footage, music, and a big, big screen, are just plain awesome.  And the sampling of Jefferson Airplane's "I Saw You" throughout some of the quieter scenes is a stroke of genius.

Crudup is believable as Steve Prefontaine. Sutherland is even better, unbelievable as Bowerman. The late 60's and early 70's really happened. The University of Oregon really happened. And Pre really happened. I was there (going to school in Portland), and "Without Limits" brings it all back.

Without Limits spreading

Readers have reported that Warner Brothers' Pre biopic "Without Limits" seems to be in general release now.  We've heard from Boston, Buffalo, Rochester N.Y., Denver, Maine, Minnesota, and Knoxville, among others.

Douglas Kretzmann in Denver reports, "It opened in a plush new moviehouse, but a week later was showing only in a small suburban theatre. When I saw it on Friday night, the audience was me, a high school cross-country team, and a few other folks. It seems to be sinking into an undeserved oblivion."

Moral of the story:  go see it as soon as you see it listed, because it may not hang around long.

Boston Film Festival
September 1, 1998

BOSTON (Variety) - Actress Holly Hunter and writer-director Robert Towne have been named the recipients of this year's ``Film Excellence Awards'' at the Boston Film Festival.

Hunter's latest film, ``Living Out Loud,'' will be shown at the festival, with the presentation preceding the screening. Towne's ``Without Limits,'' about late athlete Steve Prefontaine, will screen in conjunction with his appearance.

The 14th annual festival runs Sept. 10-20.

... a related article:  September 15 ... ROBERT TOWNE AND MASSACHUSETTS’ movie enthusiast Gov. Paul Cellucci met Monday at the Mass. State House after Towne presented the fifth annual Mass. Film Office Screenwriting Competition Grand Prize to Nicole Galland (“The Winter Population”) of Vineyard Haven, Mass. Towne is at Boston’s Film Fest, of course, with his critically acclaimed (directed-screenplayed)  “Without Limits.” Towne, who knows whereof he writes, told the group, “If you haven’t tried it, you may not know how truly difficult it is to write a script”

Toronto Film Festival

Toronto Film Festival organizers announced that Robert Towne's ''Without Limits'' has been included as one of the festival's gala presentations. The film stars Billy Crudup as legendary middle-distance runner Steve ``Pre'' Prefontaine. The film is both directed and co-written by Towne, who won an Oscar for his screenplay of ``Chinatown''.

A message from Walt Murphy ...
August 1998

"Without Limits", the second movie about Steve Prefontaine, will finally open in Los Angeles and New York the week of September 8. Press screenings have already begun.

As Jeff Atkinson, who worked on the movie, pointed out earlier this year, early attendance figures go a long way in determining the success (or failure) of a movie.

If you live in or near L.A. or NY, make an effort to get all your friends to go to an early showing. If you're a coach or an athlete, get your whole team (and their parents) to attend.
