Modeling Length in Base 5
We can use regrouping in the base five numeration system to establish a model that focuses on the concepts of geometric measurement and the relationship between dimension, perimeter, and area.
In the model, the linear pieces have the same lengths as the edges of the base five area pieces (lesson 13) as follows:

The units can be regrouped to measure various lengths...

We would call this measurement 43five. It is equivalent to 23 linear units. What would the base five measurements for the following length segments be...
How many linear units do these base five measurements contain?
We can construct measurement tools using any base. In class, we make base five measuring tapes, and talk about other bases. Can you create a measuring tool using base eight? base 4? You can measure some things around the house with your new rulers!
